Government Moves to Strengthen Kenya’s Aviation Sector Amid Safety and Labour Concerns

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing safety, security and operational efficiency in Kenya’s aviation sector following a high-level meeting bringing together key industry regulators.

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir on Wednesday chaired a consultative meeting with officials from the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), alongside Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development Teresia Mbaika.

The discussions focused on critical issues affecting the aviation industry, including aviation safety, airport security and recent signs of industrial unrest that could disrupt operations.

Chirchir emphasized that the government is determined to ensure the aviation sector continues operating efficiently, noting that the industry remains a key driver of Kenya’s economy. He said ongoing modernization works at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), together with improvements at other airports and aerodromes across the country, are expected to boost the sector’s competitiveness and support future growth.

The Cabinet Secretary also stressed the importance of maintaining stability within the industry to maximize the benefits of the ongoing infrastructure investments.

On her part, Principal Secretary Teresia Mbaika called for closer coordination among government agencies involved in aviation, saying effective collaboration is essential in supporting industry players and ensuring the sector remains stable, efficient and aligned with national development priorities.

The meeting concluded with a commitment by the aviation leadership to continue engaging stakeholders in addressing emerging challenges and strengthening Kenya’s aviation sector as a strategic pillar of economic growth and national development.
