Kalonzo Says Kenyans Cannot Be Bought, Cites Ol Kalou Vote as Turning Point

Wiper Patriotic Front and Azimio la Umoja Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said the outcome of the Ol Kalou by-election and the rise of the Gen Z movement demonstrate that Kenyans are becoming more politically conscious and cannot be swayed by money.

Speaking during a church service at Faith Baptist Presbyterian Church in Tseikuru, Kitui County, Kalonzo reflected on his long association with the church, recalling that he had worshipped there since childhood and underscoring the role of faith in shaping principled leadership.

The former Vice President told the congregation that recent political developments show citizens are increasingly rejecting attempts to influence elections through handouts and inducements.

Referring to the Ol Kalou by-election, Kalonzo said the results sent a strong message that voters are prepared to make independent decisions regardless of financial incentives. He argued that Kenyans now understand that public funds should be used to improve livelihoods through development projects rather than for political campaigns.

He described both the Gen Z movement and the Ol Kalou by-election as defining moments in the country’s democratic journey, saying they reflect the emergence of a more informed, engaged and assertive electorate demanding accountability from leaders.

Kalonzo also urged political leaders to embrace servant leadership founded on justice, integrity and humility. He cited former President Mwai Kibaki’s decision not to have the Thika Superhighway named after him as an example of selfless leadership, saying national interests should always take precedence over personal recognition.

He called on leaders across the political divide to put the welfare of citizens first and uphold values that strengthen public trust in leadership.
