Chaos Erupts at St. Stephen’s ACK Cathedral as Orengo, Sifuna Attend Sunday Service

Tension erupted outside St. Stephen’s ACK Cathedral, Kisumu, on Sunday after suspected goons reportedly attempted to force their way into the church while Siaya Governor James Orengo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna were attending a church fundraiser.

The incident sparked panic among worshippers, with running battles reported outside the cathedral. Motorcycles were also set ablaze during the confrontation as security officers moved in to disperse the crowds and restore order. The church service, however, continued after calm was restored.

Reacting to the incident, Governor Orengo condemned what he described as an attack on leaders inside a place of worship.

“It is deeply shameful that goons were sent to attack us inside a house of God. But let it be known: we will not be intimidated.”

The governor thanked God for what he termed divine protection and expressed gratitude to members of the public who shielded the leaders during the chaos.

“I thank the Almighty God for His divine protection, and I am profoundly grateful to the brave Wananchi who stood firm, shielded us, and ensured we left safe and in one piece.”

He added that places of worship should remain sacred and free from violence.

“The sanctuary of the Lord cannot be defiled by cowardice. We remain focused on the people’s cause.”
