Nyamira Senator Okong’o Mogeni has called on the government to ensure residents whose land will be acquired for the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Kisumu and other parts of Western Kenya receive fair and adequate compensation.

Mogeni said communities affected by the railway project should be treated equally with residents in other parts of the country where the railway line has already passed, insisting that landowners must receive proper compensation for their property.

Speaking in the Bomwagamo area of North Mugirango Constituency, the senator urged the government to uphold fairness and transparency in the land acquisition process to prevent affected families from suffering losses as a result of the project.

He stressed that residents of Western Kenya deserve the same consideration and treatment accorded to communities in other regions, warning against any form of discrimination in determining compensation for land acquired for the railway construction.

The senator also called on residents of Nyamira County and the wider Gusii region to support Dr Fred Matiang’i’s presidential bid under the Jubilee Party as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Mogeni further urged the government to demonstrate its commitment to development by addressing the concerns of local communities and ensuring that major infrastructure projects benefit residents without unfairly disadvantaging those whose land is required.

The proposed railway expansion is expected to raise important questions about land acquisition, compensation and the protection of property rights for communities along the planned route.
