Police Arrest Three Suspects Over Attack on Political Convoy in Keumbu Kisii

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the arrest of three suspects following a violent attack on a political convoy in Keumbu, Kisii County, as investigations into the incident intensify.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, July 4, the Office of the Inspector General said the incident occurred along the Kisii–Keroka Road on Friday, July 3, where a political group traveling through the area came under attack.
According to the statement, investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kisii Central, and officers from Keumbu Police Station responded swiftly after videos of the attack circulated widely on mainstream and social media.
The suspects are currently in police custody as detectives continue reviewing video footage and pursuing additional leads that could result in further arrests.
“The National Police Service wishes to update the public on the ongoing investigation into a video circulating in mainstream and social media, which depicts an attack on a convoy of motor vehicles,” the statement reads.
Police strongly condemned the violence, describing political intolerance in any form as unacceptable and warning that those responsible will face the full force of the law.
The Inspector General has also directed the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) to conduct an independent assessment of the incident, including examining whether there were any operational gaps in the police response. Officers from the unit have already been deployed to the affected area.
The NPS appealed to members of the public to assist investigators by providing any information related to the attack through the nearest police station or official reporting channels.
The incident has heightened concerns over rising cases of political violence in Kisii County ahead of the 2027 General Election, with recent political events in the region having been marred by allegations of attacks, intimidation and disruption.
Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring all those involved are identified, arrested and prosecuted.
