Opposition Demands Probe into Alleged Abduction and Torture of Activist Davis Lichuma

Leaders from the United Alternative Government on Tuesday visited activist Davis Lichuma at Nairobi Women’s Hospital, where he is receiving treatment after what they described as an abduction and torture following the June 25 demonstrations in Nairobi. The delegation was led by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and included former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa and other opposition figures.

According to the opposition leaders, Lichuma was allegedly abducted after taking part in the peaceful march to Parliament and was later found hospitalized in critical condition. They said he was unable to speak and appeared visibly traumatized, describing his condition as evidence of severe physical and psychological abuse.

Speaking after the hospital visit, Kalonzo condemned the alleged abduction and torture, saying such actions amount to a serious violation of human rights and undermine Kenya’s democratic freedoms. He maintained that no Kenyan should face violence for exercising the constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

The leaders called for a prompt, independent and thorough investigation into the incident, urging security agencies to identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice. They also appealed to law enforcement officers to uphold professionalism and operate within the confines of the Constitution and the law.

The opposition further expressed solidarity with Lichuma’s family, pledging to continue pushing for accountability while calling for greater protection of citizens, particularly young people and activists, from intimidation, unlawful arrests and enforced disappearances.

Authorities had not immediately commented on the allegations at the time of publication. The claims made by the opposition have not been independently verified, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding Lichuma’s alleged abduction and injuries are expected to establish what transpired.
