Gachagua Warns Museveni Over Media Crackdown, Vows to Defend Journalists in Kenya

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized the closure of media outlets in Uganda, warning President Yoweri Museveni and his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, against actions he said threaten press freedom in the region.
In a statement, Gachagua argued that suppressing independent media would not address the challenges facing citizens. He said the real issues confronting governments are unfulfilled promises, economic hardship and corruption, adding that shutting down media channels that expose these problems does not make them disappear but instead leaves citizens without protection.
The former Deputy President also linked the issue to Kenya, saying developments in Uganda should concern Kenyans because of the close ties between the two countries. He maintained that governments have a responsibility to safeguard journalists regardless of their nationality.
Gachagua warned that if any journalist is harmed while working in Kenya, whether a Kenyan citizen or a foreign national, the government should be held fully accountable for ensuring their safety and security.
He further pledged to remain vigilant and continue speaking out against any threats directed at journalists operating in Kenya, saying a free and independent press is essential for transparency and accountability.
His remarks come amid growing concern over press freedom in the region following the reported shutdown of media operations in Uganda and increased scrutiny of journalists covering political developments
