6-kilogram cooking gas cylinders

Ol Kalou, July 7, 2026 – The ongoing parliamentary by-election campaigns in Ol Kalou have ignited political controversy, with opposition leaders accusing the government of rolling out development projects and distributing household items to influence voters ahead of the July 16 poll.

The claims centre on the distribution of mattresses, 6-kilogram cooking gas cylinders and the acceleration of electricity connections in parts of the constituency during the campaign period.

Opposition politicians argue that while residents deserve access to government services and development programmes, the timing of the initiatives raises concerns about whether public resources are being used to gain political advantage for the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate.

The allegations have become a major campaign issue, with critics urging voters to distinguish between government development programmes funded by taxpayers and campaign promises made by political candidates.

Government leaders and UDA officials have, however, defended the ongoing projects, maintaining that electricity connectivity, infrastructure development and access to clean cooking energy are part of existing government programmes intended to improve the lives of residents and are not linked to the by-election campaign. They have cited ongoing last-mile electricity connections and other development initiatives as evidence of the government’s commitment to delivering services.

The Ol Kalou by-election has emerged as one of the country’s most closely watched political contests, with both the ruling UDA and opposition parties viewing it as an important test of political support in the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

With just days remaining before polling, political temperatures continue to rise as rival camps intensify campaigns and seek to convince voters, while electoral stakeholders continue to urge all candidates to conduct peaceful and issue-based campaigns.
