Uhuru Kenyatta Welcomes High Court Ruling, Says Path Clear For Jubilee Leadership Handover

 Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has welcomed a High Court ruling upholding provisions of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act governing the transition of retired presidents from formal political party leadership.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the Office of the 4th President said Kenyatta had received the ruling with “profound respect” for the judiciary, describing it as an affirmation of Kenya’s democratic maturity rather than a restriction on his political life.

The statement said the former President recognised that leadership was not merely about occupying a position, but about cultivating public trust.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Lawrence Mugambi, also provides clarity on the long-delayed handover of the Jubilee Party chairmanship.

According to Kenyatta’s office, the delay was not caused by unwillingness to relinquish the position but resulted from an internal dispute that required legal interpretation.

“With the court’s guidance, that path is now clear,” the statement said.

Kenyatta has subsequently affirmed his willingness to have the party chairmanship handover completed openly and in accordance with the Jubilee Party constitution.

His office said he expects the party’s internal processes to proceed without further hindrance following the court’s guidance.

The former President also welcomed what he described as a new chapter for Jubilee, anchored on the rule of law and the party’s constitution.

He further expressed support for the next generation of leaders taking forward the party’s affairs.

The development comes amid continued attention on the leadership and political direction of Jubilee, with the court ruling potentially paving the way for a formal transition in the party’s leadership.
