Nyamira county Governor Amos Nyaribo has reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to the Gusii region and Western Kenya, saying the project would unlock significant socioeconomic opportunities for residents.
Governor Nyaribo said the proposed railway extension would have both direct and indirect benefits for communities along the route, including improved connectivity, trade, investment and economic growth.
The governor made the remarks on Wednesday after hosting North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko, West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka and a Kenya Railways delegation led by Managing Director Phillip Mainga for consultations on the proposed project.
Nyaribo said continued engagement between county governments, national government agencies, elected leaders and other stakeholders would be critical as preparations for implementation of the project progress.
He noted that the railway would provide an important transport link for the Gusii region while opening up new opportunities for businesses and residents.
“My administration looks forward to providing the requisite support towards delivery of the SGR,” Nyaribo said.
The meeting signals renewed efforts by leaders in the region to engage Kenya Railways and other relevant stakeholders on the proposed extension, which is expected to strengthen transport and economic links between Gusii and the wider Western region.
The governor further emphasized the importance of coordinated consultations to ensure that the interests of local communities are taken into account as the project moves forward.
