Nyamira County Referral Hospital has reached a major milestone after successfully performing its first-ever Total Hip Replacement surgeries, marking a significant step forward in the provision of specialised healthcare services within the county.

The hospital’s team of specialists conducted two successful total hip replacement procedures during a carefully planned three-hour orthopaedic operation. The surgeries offer new hope to patients who had been living with debilitating hip conditions, giving them an opportunity to regain pain-free mobility through a structured rehabilitation programme.

The historic procedures were led by Orthopaedic Surgeon and County Director for Medical Services, Dr. Jared Oeba, alongside a multidisciplinary team comprising surgical, anaesthesia, nursing and rehabilitation professionals.

The achievement means patients in Nyamira County will no longer have to travel to referral hospitals outside the county for complex joint replacement procedures, reducing both the financial burden and emotional strain on families.

Nyamira County Referral Hospital now has the expertise, equipment and infrastructure to routinely perform Total Hip Replacement surgeries for patients suffering from severe hip damage caused by trauma, arthritis and other degenerative conditions. Several more patients are already scheduled to undergo the life-changing procedure.

Governor Amos Nyaribo hailed the milestone as a reflection of his administration’s continued investment in strengthening healthcare services, equipping medical facilities and expanding access to specialised treatment across the county.

He also commended the Department of Health Services, led by CECM Dr. Donald Mogoi, together with the entire team at Nyamira County Referral Hospital, for achieving the landmark feat, saying it demonstrates the county’s commitment to delivering quality, specialised healthcare to residents.
