A sombre mood has engulfed Kirinyaga County following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of nine people at Murubara along the Mwea–Embu Highway on Saturday morning.

The victims were travelling in a tuk-tuk to a rice farm where they had been hired for a planting job when the three-wheeler collided with a lorry. The impact of the crash was severe, killing all nine occupants on the spot.

The deceased are believed to have been casual farm workers heading to the fields in the Mwea rice-growing scheme, one of Kenya’s largest rice-producing regions. Their deaths have left families and the local community in shock, as relatives gathered at the scene seeking information about their loved ones.

Police officers, emergency responders and members of the public rushed to the scene to recover the bodies and clear the wreckage from the busy highway. The victims’ bodies were moved to a nearby mortuary as authorities began the process of identifying them and notifying their next of kin.

Investigators have launched inquiries to establish the exact cause of the collision. Preliminary findings are expected to determine whether speeding, dangerous overtaking, mechanical failure or other factors contributed to the fatal crash. Local leaders and road safety advocates have called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and greater caution among motorists to prevent further loss of life.
