Matiang’i Condemns Hooliganism, Calls for Peace and National Unity

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has condemned the growing cases of hooliganism and politically motivated violence in the country, urging Kenyans to embrace peace, respect for the rule of law, and national unity.

Speaking during a church service at ATG Chapel in Kamulu, Matiang’i expressed concern over incidents of violence that have disrupted political gatherings and public events in different parts of the country. He said such acts threaten democracy, undermine peaceful coexistence, and discourage citizens from freely participating in national affairs.

Matiang’i emphasized that Kenya’s political differences should never be resolved through intimidation, destruction of property, or violence. He called on leaders across the political divide to exercise restraint and promote tolerance, noting that the country’s stability depends on peaceful engagement and respect for differing opinions.

The former Interior CS also urged young people not to allow themselves to be used to perpetrate violence for political interests, saying their energy should instead be directed towards education, innovation, entrepreneurship, and nation-building.

He further appealed to security agencies to remain professional and ensure that all Kenyans are protected equally regardless of their political affiliation. According to Matiang’i, safeguarding constitutional freedoms, including the right to assemble and express political views peacefully, is essential for preserving democracy.

His remarks come amid growing concern over incidents of political violence reported in various parts of the country as political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election continues to intensify.

Church leaders who hosted the service also appealed for peaceful coexistence, urging political leaders to prioritize dialogue and responsible leadership over confrontation.
