Opposition Raises Alarm Over Media Freedom, Political Intimidation

Leaders of the United Alternative Government have expressed concern over what they describe as increasing intimidation of the media, opposition leaders, and government critics, urging respect for constitutional rights and accountability from those in power.

The leaders, led by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, attended a church service at AIC Namanga Border in Kajiado County alongside former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, Senators Seki Lenku, Dan Maanzo, Kiio Wambua, Advocate Ndegwa Njiru, and other political leaders.

Addressing the congregation, Kalonzo criticised what he termed as growing pressure on the media, citing recent actions involving The Standard newspaper as a sign that press freedom is under threat. He said the Constitution protects media independence and warned against attempts to silence journalists and independent media houses.

Kalonzo also condemned what he described as threats against leaders of the United Alternative Government. He said any move to arrest one of the coalition’s principals would be viewed as an attack on the entire leadership, adding that they stood in solidarity with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following reported threats against him.

The opposition leader further reflected on the events of June 25, which marked the second anniversary of the Gen Z protests that claimed several lives. He alleged that authorities prevented opposition leaders and families of those who died from laying flowers outside Parliament by deploying security officers and erecting barricades, despite what he said was a peaceful commemorative event.

The leaders called on Kenyans to continue praying for the country, saying the nation was facing growing political tension. They expressed concern over what they described as increased intimidation of opposition leaders, misuse of state institutions, and harassment of young people and dissenting voices.

They concluded by calling for adherence to the Constitution, justice for victims of alleged rights violations, and greater accountability among public officials.
