Ugandan Military Raid Disrupts Nation Media Group Operations

KAMPALA, Uganda – Nation Media Group Uganda (NMG-U) has announced that its operations have been severely disrupted after soldiers reportedly raided its premises in Kampala in the early hours of Sunday, forcing the closure of its offices and interrupting broadcasts and newspaper production.

In a statement released on Sunday, the media house said military personnel arrived at its headquarters in Namuwongo and its offices at the Kampala Serena International Conference Centre at around 1:00 a.m. According to the company, the operation resulted in the disconnection of electricity, rendering its facilities inaccessible and disrupting normal operations across its television, radio, and newspaper platforms.

The development comes amid heightened political tension in Uganda following reports that security forces led by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, had taken action against the broadcaster. However, authorities had not immediately issued an official explanation for the operation at the time of the media house’s statement.

Despite the disruption, Nation Media Group Uganda assured its audiences that it would continue publishing news through its digital platforms while working to restore normal operations. The company thanked readers, viewers, listeners, and business partners for their continued support, pledging to provide updates as more information becomes available.

The raid has raised fresh concerns over media freedom and freedom of expression in Uganda, where journalists and independent media organisations have periodically accused security agencies of intimidation, censorship, and interference with news operations, particularly during periods of political tension. The incident is expected to attract scrutiny from press freedom advocates and regional human rights organisations as they seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding the military operation.
