Authorities Destroy 4.6 Tonnes of Contraband Sugar and Bhang in Kisii

More than 4.6 tonnes of illegal goods, including contraband sugar and cannabis, were destroyed in Kisii County on Thursday as authorities intensified efforts to combat illicit trade and drug-related crimes.

The destruction exercise took place at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital incinerator, where 3,600 kilograms of contraband sugar and 1,040 kilograms of bhang (cannabis) were safely incinerated. The exhibits had been stored at the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kisii following the conclusion of criminal cases investigated by officers from the National Police Service (NPS).

According to officials, the destruction was conducted under lawful court orders and supervised by the Kisii Law Courts in accordance with established legal procedures governing the disposal of exhibits. Authorities said the exercise was aimed at ensuring that the seized items do not find their way back into circulation.

The event underscored the commitment of the criminal justice system and law enforcement agencies to enforcing the rule of law, safeguarding public health, and protecting communities from the dangers associated with illicit goods and drug abuse. Officials noted that the destruction of the exhibits sends a strong message to those involved in drug trafficking and other forms of organised crime.

The exercise was witnessed by Kisii Law Courts Magistrate Hon. Mildred Obura, Court Registrar Hon. Winnie Keter, Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr. Marita Oimeke, and Kisii County NEMA Director Simon Tonui. Also present were members of the County Unit Coordination Committee, National Police Service officers led by Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui, and other stakeholders.
