DCP’s Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru Wins Ol Kalou By-Election in Landslide

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru has been elected the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency after securing a commanding victory in the by-election held on 16 July 2026.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Returning Officer Antony Njiraine declared Waweru the winner after he garnered 35,440 votes, comfortably defeating his closest challenger, Samuel Muchina Nyagah of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), who received 5,450 votes.
The remaining candidates trailed by wide margins. Wilson Mwaniki Kigwa of Jubilee Party garnered 198 votes, Stephen Wanyoike Waithaka (NLP) received 103 votes, Timothy Kamau Kariuki (PM) polled 51 votes, Edwin Kariiri Muchiri (PNU) secured 28 votes, Abdifatah Hussein Abdullahi (FPK) received 19 votes, Edward Mathenge Mwaniki (KMM) garnered 16 votes, while Rachael Wangui Njoroge (PDP) received 11 votes.
According to the IEBC, 73,480 voters were registered in the constituency, with 41,656 ballots cast, translating to a voter turnout of 57 per cent.
The Ol Kalou by-election attracted national attention, with both government and opposition leaders camping in the constituency during weeks of intense campaigns. The outcome is expected to have significant political implications as parties continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Following the declaration, supporters of the DCP candidate broke into celebrations, hailing the victory as a major political statement.
The IEBC thanked the voters of Ol Kalou, candidates, political parties, election officials, security agencies, observers, the media and other stakeholders for contributing to what it described as a free, fair and credible by-election.
Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru is now set to be gazetted and sworn in as the new Member of the National Assembly for Ol Kalou Constituency, officially filling the parliamentary seat.
