The National Police Service (NPS) has launched investigations into the arrest of Citizen TV journalist Francis Odee, with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) also initiating an independent inquiry into the matter.

In a press statement dated October 22, 2026, the NPS said its Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) had commenced investigations to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding Odee’s arrest in Nairobi.

The police service said the investigations were intended to establish what happened and inform appropriate action in accordance with the law.

“Upon receipt of the report, the NPS Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) commenced investigations to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident, with a view to taking appropriate, transparent and accountable action within the confines of our laws,” the statement said.

The involvement of IPOA adds an independent oversight dimension to the investigations, as the authority also seeks to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The NPS said it would cooperate fully with IPOA and provide the necessary support to facilitate what it described as a thorough, credible and expeditious investigation.

Police reaffirm support for journalists

The police service also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining professional working relationships with the media, noting that journalists play a critical role in promoting public confidence in policing and strengthening democracy.

The NPS said it would continue offering journalists the necessary support to enable them to perform their duties.

It emphasised that a free and responsible media remains an important partner in the promotion of accountability and public trust in law enforcement institutions.

The statement comes amid scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding Odee’s arrest, with the outcome of the investigations expected to clarify the events that led to the incident.

Public urged to share information

The NPS appealed to members of the public and the media to remain calm and allow the investigative processes to take their course.

It further urged anyone with relevant information to report to the nearest police station or use the available reporting channels.

Members of the public can provide information through the police emergency numbers 999 or 911, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) hotline 0800 722 203, or WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.

NPS pledges accountability

In the statement signed by Director of Corporate Communication and NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the police service reiterated its commitment to professionalism, discipline, transparency and accountability.

The NPS also pledged to uphold constitutional standards on human rights and fundamental freedoms as the investigations proceed.

No findings or conclusions on the circumstances of Odee’s arrest were announced in the statement.

The investigations by the NPS Internal Affairs Unit and IPOA are expected to establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine whether any further action is warranted.
