Judgment Day Arrives in Sharon Otieno Murder Case

After nearly eight years of court proceedings, the High Court is set to deliver its judgment today in the murder case of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno. The decision, expected at the Milimani Law Courts, will determine the fate of former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo and former Migori County employee Caspal Obiero, who are facing charges over Sharon’s death.

The case has remained one of Kenya’s most high-profile criminal trials since Sharon was killed in September 2018 while she was pregnant. Prosecutors argued that the three accused played a role in planning and executing the murder, presenting witness testimonies and forensic evidence gathered during the lengthy trial. The accused have consistently denied any involvement and urged the court to find them not guilty.

Families of those involved, legal teams, human rights advocates and members of the public are expected to closely follow the judgment, which is seen as a significant moment in Kenya’s criminal justice system. Security has also been heightened around the court as interest in the case remains high.

The court’s ruling will determine whether the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. If any of the accused are found guilty, the court will later determine the appropriate sentence. If acquitted, they will be cleared of the murder charges, bringing one of the country’s longest-running and most closely watched murder trials to an end
