Gachagua Questions IEBC’s Ability to Deliver Credible 2027 Elections, Alleges State Interference

Dcp Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has raised concerns over the preparedness and independence of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), claiming the electoral body may not be able to deliver a free and credible election.

Speaking during a press conference on Friday, Gachagua alleged that the government was interfering with the electoral process and accused state officials of openly engaging in political campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The former Deputy President further claimed that IEBC officials were too close to the government, alleging that the commission was “dining with the government” instead of operating independently.

Gachagua also questioned the conduct of IEBC Chairman Erastus Ethekon, saying the chairperson does not have the authority to postpone elections, and insisting that the commission must uphold its constitutional mandate of ensuring credible polls.

The DCP leader made allegations of voter influence, claiming that some individuals were being bribed through distribution of items such as mattresses, cooking gas, electricity connections, boats, and money, while accusing IEBC of remaining silent on the matter.

He further alleged that there had been incidents of government-sponsored violence targeting political opponents, citing the situation as a threat to democratic participation.

Gachagua called on Kenyans and institutions to remain vigilant, saying the credibility of the 2027 elections would depend on the independence of IEBC, fairness in political competition, and respect for democratic principles.
