Sifuna’s Removal Official as Registrar Updates ODM Records

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has formally recognised the removal of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General, marking a significant development in the party’s leadership.

In a letter dated July 9, 2026, addressed to ODM Deputy Party Leader, National Chairperson and Executive Director, Registrar of Political Parties J.C. Loronokou confirmed that the changes had been effected after reviewing documents submitted by the party.

The Registrar stated that the decision was reached after considering the party’s submissions and noting the absence of a response from Sifuna regarding the matter.

“Upon review of the documents submitted by the party and the lack of response from Hon. Edwin Watenya Sifuna, we note that the removal of the party Secretary General was in line with the Political Parties Act Cap. 7D and the ODM party constitution,” the letter reads.

The Registrar further confirmed that the party’s official records have now been updated to reflect the leadership change.

The letter also references earlier correspondence dated July 8, 2026, concerning the powers of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to establish committees and determine their terms of reference, suggesting the decision followed internal party processes.

The development gives legal effect to ODM’s decision to remove Sifuna from the influential Secretary-General position, a role that oversees the party’s day-to-day operations and administration.

The move is expected to intensify political debate within ODM as the party continues to reorganise its leadership ahead of the 2027 General Election. It remains unclear whether Sifuna will challenge the Registrar’s decision or pursue legal action against his removal.

The Registrar’s recognition means the leadership changes submitted by ODM have now been officially entered into the records of the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.
