Heavy Security, Roadblocks Disrupt Movement as Saba Saba Demonstrations Begin

Nairobi, July 7, 2026 — Kenya woke up to heightened security on Tuesday as authorities rolled out extensive police operations ahead of the annual Saba Saba demonstrations, resulting in major traffic disruptions and restricted movement in parts of the country.

In Nairobi, anti-riot police were deployed across key sections of the Central Business District, with security officers mounting roadblocks and restricting access to strategic government installations. Security barriers were erected along several roads leading to Parliament and other sensitive areas as police sought to prevent demonstrators from accessing protected zones.

The heavy security presence also extended to major highways leading into the capital. Motorists and public service vehicles encountered lengthy delays at multiple checkpoints, with traffic building up on several routes during the morning rush hour. Many commuters were forced to spend hours on the road as officers conducted inspections and controlled the flow of vehicles entering the city.

Despite the disruptions, public transport continued operating on some routes, although movement remained significantly slower than usual due to congestion caused by the security measures.

Beyond Nairobi, police increased patrols and deployed additional officers in several towns as authorities monitored the situation amid expectations of demonstrations in different parts of the country.

The annual Saba Saba protests, which commemorate the historic July 7, 1990 push for multiparty democracy, have in recent years evolved into a platform for citizens to voice concerns over governance, the cost of living and other national issues.

By Tuesday morning, isolated groups of protesters had begun gathering in some areas, while police maintained a visible presence to prevent unrest and safeguard public order. Authorities continued to monitor developments as the situation remained fluid.

Security agencies have urged members of the public to remain peaceful, cooperate with law enforcement officers and use alternative routes where possible due to ongoing traffic disruptions.
