Kenyatta Avenue–Upper Hill Viaduct Moves to Superstructure Stage as Nairobi Traffic Solution Takes Shape

Construction of the Kenyatta Avenue–Upper Hill Viaduct has reached a major milestone, with the project advancing to the superstructure stage as efforts to ease traffic congestion in Nairobi gather pace.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) announced that the project has progressed beyond the substructure phase, where reinforced concrete piers and pier caps have been completed. Contractors have now begun preparations for the installation of precast girders that will support the elevated bridge deck.

Once complete, the one-kilometre dual carriageway viaduct is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Upper Hill, Valley Road and Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), improving mobility while boosting productivity and economic activity.
The viaduct will extend from the Integrity Centre area, passing Serena Hotel and All Saints’ Cathedral before connecting to Kenyatta Avenue. In addition to vehicle lanes, the project includes dedicated cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways aimed at promoting safer and more inclusive urban transport.
The project is part of a wider road network upgrade that also includes the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong/Nyerere Interchange and the Upper Hill–Haile Selassie Overpass, which together are expected to improve connectivity across the city.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration said it continues to support the implementation of the project by coordinating security measures, enhancing road safety awareness and protecting critical public infrastructure during construction.
