Pro-Government Gen Z Group Opposes June 25 Protests

A group of pro-government Gen Z activists supporting President William Ruto’s two-term agenda met at Comfort Suites along Valley Road in Nairobi on Wednesday and declared that they would not participate in the planned June 25 protests.

During the meeting, attended by several youth leaders including activist Dennis Omwansa and Rose Lyn Arionya, the group said demonstrations were unnecessary because the government had already initiated compensation for families who lost loved ones and for those injured during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.

The group also opposed plans by some young Kenyans to take to the streets in honour of those who died during the demonstrations, including the late Rex Masai, who became one of the most prominent victims of the unrest.

Speaking after the meeting, the leaders argued that protests would only heighten tensions and that families affected by last year’s events should instead be allowed to receive support and compensation without further political agitation.

They warned that anyone found engaging in violence or destruction during Thursday’s demonstrations should be held accountable, insisting that peaceful dialogue and development should take precedence over renewed street protests.

The remarks come amid growing anticipation over nationwide demonstrations planned to mark the first anniversary of the deadly 2024 Finance Bill protests, which left dozens dead and hundreds injured.
