The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations has verified 259 claims under Phase VI of the compensation programme, approving a total of Sh83.65 million for victims of various forms of harm.

The latest compensation phase covers both civilians and uniformed officers who suffered human rights violations, including cases arising from demonstrations and public protests.

According to an update issued by the Panel on Thursday, the verified claims fall into five broad categories: aggravated injuries, severe injuries, moderate injuries, minor injuries and economic losses.

The largest number of claims involved minor injuries, with 133 verified cases attracting compensation of Sh6.65 million.

This was followed by 54 cases of moderate injuries, for which the Panel allocated Sh27 million, while 35 severe injury claims attracted Sh35 million.

The Panel also verified 30 claims involving economic losses, with compensation amounting to Sh1.5 million.

Seven claims were classified as aggravated injuries, with different compensation levels applied depending on the circumstances and severity of the harm. The claims attracted a combined Sh13.5 million.

The Panel said every claim undergoes verification and authentication before a decision is made, with successful claimants to be notified of the outcome.

More claims still being considered

The compensation body said it continues to receive submissions through its official channels and urged victims who have not yet presented their claims to come forward for consideration.

The Panel said its objective was to ensure that no eligible victim is left behind as the programme progresses.

It also appealed for patience from claimants, saying the verification process was necessary to establish the authenticity and circumstances surrounding each claim.

The Panel further said it remains engaged with victims and beneficiaries throughout the process to address concerns, clarify the status of claims and ensure that eligible victims are treated fairly and with dignity.

The latest figures bring renewed attention to the compensation of people affected by human rights violations, particularly those arising during demonstrations and public protests.
