The Principal Secretary for Tourism, Ambassador Julius Bitok has welcomed delegates attending the 16th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo, saying Kenya’s tourism sector has a bright future driven by technology, sports and increased investment.

Bitok welcomed more than 10,000 delegates from over 40 countries and more than 400 exhibitors participating in the expo.

He said this year’s theme, which focuses on digital transformation and artificial intelligence in shaping the future of tourism, is timely as technology continues to influence the sector.

According to the Principal Secretary, the government’s investments in tourism, infrastructure, forums and sports facilities will help Kenya achieve its tourism targets, particularly if the country effectively leverages technology and artificial intelligence.

He said Kenya’s hosting of major international sporting events presents significant opportunities for the tourism industry.

The country is set to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, while it has also won the bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships.

Bitok said the 2027 AFCON tournament is expected to bring a significant number of visitors to Kenya, with Nairobi alone projected to receive about one million people during the tournament period.

He said the expected influx of visitors has prompted the government and stakeholders to assess whether Nairobi has adequate accommodation, infrastructure and other facilities to accommodate the anticipated visitors.

The Principal Secretary urged the private sector and other tourism stakeholders to prepare to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the upcoming sporting events.

He said Kenya could also position itself to host other major international sporting events in the future, including the Olympic Games.

Bitok further assured international visitors attending the Magical Kenya Travel Expo that Kenya is a safe destination and urged them to feel at home, interact freely and enjoy their stay in the country.

The 16th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo brings together tourism stakeholders, exhibitors and delegates from Kenya and other countries to showcase tourism products and explore opportunities for growth in the sector.
