Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced intensified security operations in Samburu and Isiolo counties as the government steps up efforts to curb banditry and illegal firearms in the region.
Murkomen said security agencies would continue conducting operations targeting individuals involved in banditry, illegal possession of firearms and attacks against civilians, livestock and security officers.
“We will continue with the operations to ensure that all people who have illegal firearms, and those targeting our officers, civilians, and livestock, are dealt with decisively,” he said.
However, the CS called for greater caution by security officers following reports of livestock being killed during a recent security operation.
Murkomen directed security agencies to ensure their operations minimise harm to civilians and livestock, stressing the need for intelligence-led interventions.
“I ask our security agencies to exercise maximum caution during operations to minimise collateral damage,” he said.
The CS defended the heightened security operations, saying increased criticism was an indication that authorities were putting greater pressure on bandit networks in areas that have experienced prolonged insecurity.
“The noise that is there is because we are tightening the nut. We will continue until we liberate those areas before the next election,” Murkomen said.
He further disclosed that security agencies have recovered more than 3,000 illegal firearms and 8,000 rounds of ammunition in the wider Kerio Valley as part of efforts to dismantle armed groups and restore security.
Murkomen spoke at Nandi Hills Stadium in Nandi County, where he presided over the Nandi East/Tinderet KNUT Branch Empowerment Ceremony.
The event also included a contribution towards the purchase of a staff bus and the construction of a plaza.
The CS commended the teachers’ association for its efforts to improve the welfare of its members and reiterated the government’s commitment to reforms aimed at strengthening Kenya’s education sector
