The family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has begun preparations for the first anniversary of his death, with his widow, Ida Odinga, leading a committee tasked with coordinating the commemorative activities.

Ida spoke to the media on Thursday at Capital Hill in Nairobi, accompanied by members of the committee overseeing the preparations.

The team is expected to spearhead the organisation and facilitation of activities planned to mark one year since the death of Raila Odinga, who passed away in October 2025.

The briefing brought together members of the organising team as preparations get underway, with the committee expected to coordinate the different activities and engagements surrounding the anniversary.

Ida Odinga said the commemorations would provide an opportunity to remember her late husband and reflect on his life, public service and the causes he championed during his long career in Kenyan politics.

The preparations come as various groups and institutions begin planning separate activities in remembrance of the former Prime Minister, whose political career spanned several decades and included his service as Kenya’s second Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013.

The anniversary is expected to attract family members, political leaders, friends, former colleagues and members of the public who interacted with Raila during his lifetime.

The committee will oversee the coordination of the programme and facilitate the planned activities as the country approaches the first anniversary.

The Capital Hill press briefing marks one of the first major public updates on the family’s preparations, with further details on the anniversary programme expected to be communicated as the plans progress.
